Fiction is for the Mysterious

The Eye of the Beholder

Katie Waner | Bridgeport, Md

Through it all I knew that life would end this way, I just never thought it would be here looking at him wishing I could save him from all this pain, the pain that I had inflicted on him. His soft unmoving eyes bore into mine and I knew that though all along I beleived I was doing what was right, turns out I was utterly wrong.

Jacob was always the enemy, even when he was pretending that he wasn't I still always knew. It was a gut feeling, something that I just couldn't get past. From the time I was seven my mother told me to be on the look out for the Libra. That was our only task as the Mcaw Protectors to keep the Libra locked away. Of course when I asked my mother what it looked like and how I would know it she just said that it was something that was born into me as it was born into her. She just knew, one look into its face and she knew.

In her time the Libra had come into a form of Deer, one of the most innocent animals alive. If she hadn't gotten lost on that particular day, she would never of found it and who knows what havoic it could have reeked on our people.

Legends state that the Libra is an evil spirit. Born into this world to consume the most innocent of souls and deliever them to the devil. Of course most people just found it to be superstition and paid it no mind. My family however, wasn't as lucky as most. We couldn't just pretend that it didn't exsit. For some reason the Libra was connect to us, we weren't sure exactly how but it has been that way since the beginning of our people. My Greatgrandmother says that her grandmother was the prophet for our village, and that she could see the evil spirits walk amoung us. She incountered the evilest of spirits one evening the deivl himself. He had come for her daughter, saying that her soul was the most innocent he had seen and he intended on taking it. Legend says that if the most innocent, the Hannalee, most virgin, was taken to the underworld, it would give the evil spirits the ablitly to mask themselves and walk freely on the earth, snatching souls.

Her grandmother banished the most evil one from walking the earth. Thus the Libra was created. This creature was created by the devil himself, it could not be trusted but with the form it took, many let their gaurd down. It was always placed in the most innocent of creatures, masking its true self. Since my grandmother had given the curse to keep the most evil one from walking our earth, she alone had the power to see the Libra, as it was combination of the evil one and something good.

Now that has been passed on to me. The only problem was that I had found the Libra, in what I thought was my best friend. Now he was suffering as the enchantment to rid the evil from his body was taking its toll. But along with the evil that would be released so would his soul, a price we were willing to pay. Of course he had no idea why when he looked into the face of his killer, he saw the person he trusted most in the world.
